This Balkan state has endured its fair share of troubles over the past 100 years and more. Still, it is a fascinating city to visit. I was there in May 2015.
Belgrade, Serbia's capital, is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. For centuries, it has been a strategic crossroads between East and West. The city's architecture reflects its complex past, with Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and socialist-era buildings standing alongside modern structures.

Belgrade's old town, Kalemegdan, features a medieval fortress, cobblestone streets, and lively cafes. The city's cultural scene is thriving, with numerous museums, galleries, and festivals throughout the year. Belgrade is also known for its nightlife, with floating clubs and bars on the rivers.

Despite its turbulent past, Belgrade maintains a strong sense of community and a dash of Balkan charm. Visitors can enjoy the city's laid-back atmosphere, rich history, and warm hospitality.
Serbia has numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites.
